History of the Festival de Cannes

The Festival de Cannes was conceived in 1939 as a democratic alternative to the Venice Film Festival, which had become dominated by fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. Though the first edition was cancelled due to the outbreak of World War II, the festival finally opened in September 1946, establishing Cannes as cinema's most glamorous stage.

The Palme d'Or, the festival's supreme award, took its current form in 1955. Over the decades, Cannes has launched the careers of countless filmmakers and provided a platform for groundbreaking cinema: the French New Wave, the New Hollywood movement, and today's wave of global auteurs have all found their first major audience here.

Cannes is also home to the Marché du Film, the world's largest film market, where thousands of industry professionals buy, sell, and co-produce films. The combination of artistic prestige and commercial power makes Cannes uniquely influential in shaping the global film landscape.
